Legendary mountaineer set to share his adventures

eMdloti's avid adventurer will be sharing tales and beautiful images of his exciting adventures at the Oyster Box Hotel.

EMDLOTI’S Sean Wisedale has gone where few other people have gone. Not only has he conquered Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, which spans 8 850 metres above sea level, but he has also traversed up the world’s six other highest peaks. To date he has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro 28 times.

At the beginning of 2004, the now 50-year-old became the first South African to complete the ‘Seven Summits’ – a mountaineering prize to climb the highest mountain on every continent. He successfully scaled Mount Vinson in Antarctica (4 897m), Mount Aconcagua in South America (6 959m), Mount McKinley in Alaska (6 194m), Mount Elbrus in Europe (5 642m), Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia (4 884m), Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa (5 895m) and Mount Everest in Nepal.

On 3 November, between 6pm and 8pm, at the Oyster Box Hotel in uMhlanga, Wisedale will present an hour long talk on his adventures.

Wisedale’s fascination with mountaineering began in 1992 while he was working alongside Carte Blanche’s Derek Watts. They flew to Mount Everest’s Base camp to interview Cathy O’Dowd, the first South African mountaineer to climb Mount Everest.

In 2015 Wisedale led an expedition to the same mountain and survived the horrific earthquake which triggered an avalanche killing 22 in the camp and over 10 000 in Nepal. Wisedale and his crew were at Everest’s southern base camp when the tragedy struck.

“I have always wanted to go where other people don’t go and to discover why they don’t go there – to climb the highest peak and see the curvature of the earth,” said Wisedale when asked why he takes on the challenges.

“Thrashing through a wilderness, being surrounded by nature and like minded individuals is magical,” he added.

During his presentation, the husband and father of two will also talk about his latest expedition to the Nyiragongo (3 470m), an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Wisedale will touch on the country’s challenge of gorilla poaching as well being mesmerised while sitting on the edge of the volcano’s crater watching the molten lava fountaining 200 metres below. His talk will be supported by magnificent photos and video he has captured along the way.

Catch the intrepid explorer at The Pearl Room at the Oyster Box Hotel from 6pm to 8pm. Tickets cost R250 per person.
