Another tower planned for Glenhills

Residents have until 31 August to submit their objections to the City regarding the planned cell tower for Tipuana Drive.

BEEPS and hoots of support rang through the Glenhills community, as the Kotze family hosted a petition along Rinaldo Road on Saturday to oppose the newly planned cell tower for Tipuana Drive. The family, armed with opposition signage stood on the side of the road encouraging the community to sign their petition.

Robin and his wife Claire have alleged that the community had not been informed of the proposed 21-metre tower, however, the closing date for the objections is on Wednesday, 31 August.

“There was reportedly a notice in the Mercury on 29 July, but not everyone reads the paper everyday. There have been no public meetings nor have people been given letters of notification,” he said.

Within half an hour of setting up the collection effort for the petition Kotze said they had received 25 signatures from people who confirmed that they have not been informed of the project.

“There are three other towers in a one kilometre radius of the proposed tower. I have full signal here. They are in the process of laying fiber-optic cables in the commmunity. This tower will be obsolete in the next few years. Why should we live with the health risks? Have they considered alternative options?” asked the Elderberry Drive resident.

Residents who wish to oppose the tower can send their objections to ravin.indurjeeth@durban.gov.za.
