Medical needles wash up on eMdloti beach

Months after pharmaceutical waste washed up along the Durban North beaches holiday makers found medical needles at eMdloti beach.

A HOLIDAYMAKER was horrified after she and her seven year old daughter discovered two medical needles on the eMdloti beach on Saturday.

The duo from Johannesburg made the spine-chilling discovery while canvassing the beach for seashells along Second Avenue.

This comes after the City was forced to shut down several Durban North beaches in May after pharmaceutical waste presumably washed down the uMngeni River.

Sian Rayner (39) said she felt ‘freaked out’ by the discovery.

“For me the biggest concern is the obvious health risk. These needles could have come from anywhere,” she said.

“As a parent, you think your child is safe playing on the beach, while still in your line of sight and then you find something like this. Fortunately I was with Emma when she spotted the needles,” she added.
