Breast cancer in the spotlight

Join the Women’s Wellness Day on 18 August, where women will be pampered and given a breast examination.

WOMEN and women’s health are once again in the spotlight as the nation celebrates National Women’s Month this August.

With breast cancer being the most prevalent form of cancer among South African women, a group of local beauticians have decided to host a Women’s Wellness Day on 18 August, where women will be pampered and given a breast examination.

“We wanted to make this incredibly important function locally available at a reduced cost as we know that it is not always easy for women to make time for these things. We spend so much time taking care of everyone else, and end up neglecting ourselves. However, we can’t be superwoman if we don’t take care of ourselves”, said Claire de Sylva, the owner of Claire’s Beauty and Wellness.

The concepts behind the initiative, said the Durban North residents is to take along one friend, family member, co-worker or even your domestic lady and to ‘pay it forward’.

Several students of the Beauty Specialist Training Academy will be offering free hand massages to the women, while CANSA volunteers will teach them how to properly conduct a breast examination.

“Breast examinations should be done at least once a month, while a mammogram needs to be done at least every two years. The aim of the day is to teach women how to do a breast examination on their own and what to look out for. Early detection is so important, this simple self-examination, if done correctly, can save your life” said Cara Noble, CANSA divisional services manager in KwaZulu-Natal.

Women as young as 23 are diagnosed with breast cancer, added Noble.

Access to the event costs R100 per person, but this means they take a friend, co-worker or domestic worker for free. This includes your breast exam, a free hand massage and a cup of tea or coffee.  Every cent is donated to CANSA. Bookings will be available from 8.30am at the centre at 9 Westbury Crescent in Durban North.
