92-year-old urges youth to vote
The Durban North resident said the youth need to vote for their future.
DURBAN North resident Joe Schloms has participated in every election since World War II and every democratic election since 1994. Today the nonagenarian cast his vote at Northwood School. As one of the oldest voters in the area, the 92-year-old, said he would continue to vote as long as he is able. He urged young people to vote because it was their democratic right to vote. More than one million first time voters registered ahead of today’s elections according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
“I haven’t seen many young voters here today but they have to vote. It’s for their future and it’s their democratic right. If you want South Africa to change for the better, you need to vote the right people in. Today was a cinch, there were no hassles or long queues.
“I’m going to keep voting for as long as I can. The living conditions for everyone, including pensioners needs to be improved. That’s what motivated me to come out today and cast my vote,” he said.
