Breakthrough in Sunningdale search

Authorities are waiting for heavy-lifting equipment to arrive to continue the search.

SNIFFER dogs have picked up a scent at the search site where Brenda Scriven was last seen. The 62-year-old Sunningdale resident went missing more than 40 hours ago and a frantic search was launched shortly after she disappeared on Monday night.

Hundreds of people were involved in a community-driven search on Monday and Tuesday night, but volunteers were unable to find any trace of her.

Kyle Van Reenen, of Marshall Security, who has been actively involved in the search, confirmed earlier today that a sniffer dog from the Police K9 Search and Rescue Unit picked up a scent at the stream on Old North Coast Road in Glen Anil.

“Basically at the moment what we are seeing is the Police K9 Search and Rescue Unit busy combing the area with the assistance of eThekwini Fire and Rescue heavy lift unit. Within the steel cages they got a bit of a scent, that needs to be lifted up, so that the canines can get underneath to see if they can find anything further,” he said.

The mother, wife and grandmother, was on her way home when tragedy struck. It is believed her vehicle was overrun by gushing water, forcing her to abandon her car during Monday nights pouring rain.

Van Reenen said the current equipment on the scene was not able to move the massive reinforcing boulders and steel cages that had been dislodged by the heavy rains.

An anonymous source at the scene said CCTV footage of a nearby business had emerged showing Sc riven experiencing car trouble. An eyewitness also alleged seeing someone being washed way by the floods.
