Young orchid enthusiast shares his passion

Umgeni Park's Josh Hook proves that growing orchids are for young and old.

WITH over 30 000 different species it is easy to see why orchid enthusiasts can become addicted to growing and collecting these exotic beauties.

Josh Hook (13) is one of the youngest of these passionate hobbyists in the Natal Orchid Society.

Since his love for these fascinating plants took root two years ago the Umgeni Park resident has collected 56 orchids in total – which includes 20 different species.

He has won two prizes for his orchids over the years, which include Best in Dendrobium and Best Slipper Orchid.

According to Hook his fascination with orchids was inspired by his grandmother, Gladys Baldwin, who use to grow and care for these terrestrial plants.

“I like the variety. There are so many different kinds with various colours and shapes. People think that they are really difficult to grow but they really aren’t, said the Northwood High School pupil.

The trick, he said, was knowing how much water, sunlight and food the plants needed.

His favourite species, he said, was the Spider Orchid, which can produce up to 300 mesmerising flowers when it blooms.
