Staff thank the community for the outpouring of support following the fatal fire which claimed the lives of eight people.

SHEHNAAZ Gabru, exectutive director of the Lakehave/Zamani Child and Youth Care Centre has issued her first statement since the tragic fire which claimed the lives of eight people this morning. Seven children and one adult were killed in the blaze.

The Lakehaven centre, which has been in existence since 1958, is a project of Child Welfare Durban and District.

It caters for the needs of 60 children who are abused, neglected and abandoned between the ages of 6 years to 18 years. All the children placed at the centre through a court order.

“It is a highly emotional time for our staff, and the children at our home. All the children and the parents of the deceased are currently undergoing trauma counselling with our social workers as well. We appreciate all the support and condolences received.

“We trust our partners, the community and related supporters of our organisation keep us in their thoughts through this tragically trying time. We would also like to offer our appreciation those who have contacted us and offered their support,” Gabru said.
