Gateway ‘shoplifter’ injured after balcony fall

The man was transported to Mahatma Ghandi Hospital by paramedics.

A MAN believed to be a shoplifter was seriously injured after he fell from a balcony at Gateway on Monday night. It’s believed the man, was attempting to evade capture by mall security, slipped and fell off the first floor balcony.

According to Haden Searles, chairman of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF, confirmed he knew of the incident which was a shoplifting.  The goods taken from the store, a popular Jeans shop, was also recovered.

Chris Botha, spokesman for Netcare 911 confirmed they had transported a patient who was serious injured. “He was transported to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and is in a serious condition after falling off a balcony.”

The alleged shoplifting comes a month after a brazen robbery at Narandas Jewellers.

Michelle Shelley, marketing manager at Gateway confirmed the incident had occurred on Monday evening.

“The shoplifter attempted to steal merchandise from a clothing store at Gateway. He fled the scene and ran through the centre before jumping over the first floor railing into the garden area of Palm Court. A medic was called to assess any possible injuries and the suspect was transported to hospital in a stable condition. The case is currently being investigated by the SAPS,” Shelley said.
