13 injured in Umgeni interchange bus fire
The passengers suffered minor burns in their haste to escape the burning vehicle.
MORE than a dozen people were injured after a municipal bus was set on fire on the Umgeni interchange earlier today. Paramedics were called to the M19 (west bound) before the N2 interchange for a Durban Transport bus which has been set alight at around 10.30am this morning. It is believed the bus was petrol bombed but police have been unable to confirm how the blaze started.
Ceron Lennox of Rescue Care emergency services said there were no fatalities in the fire.
“It is not clear how the bus caught on fire. Various services responded to the scene. In all 13 patients were treated, with all of them suffering minor burns as they tried to exit the burning vehicle. One person suffered an asthma attack due to smoke inhalation. All of the patients were transported to local hospitals,” she said.
While it is not clear who is responsible for the fire, various Twitter sources pointed to protestors from the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement who set fire to a municipal van on Friday.
