KWAZULU-NATAL experienced the highest percentage of murders in the country, this according to The Stats SA Community Survey for 2016.
The results from the survey revealed that 5 000 households in KwaZulu-Natal where affected by murders in the last 12 months. This is closely followed by Western Cape, which tallied 4 000 affected households.
The province also experienced 9 000 motor vehicle thefts over the period. The crime was, however, most prevalent in Gauteng, where 29 000 vehicle thefts were reported.
A total of 45 000 house robberies were reported in KwaZulu-Natal (or 1.6 per cent of the province’s households) while Gauteng households experienced the most home robberies – 111 000.
Overall, 7.5 per cent South African households experienced some form of crime in the last year, the survey determined. However, the Western Cape was named the crime capital with nine per cent of households being affected by crime, a stark contrast to 6.9 per cent in KwaZulu Natal.
