Condoms, pills washes up at Beachwood

Locals have once again reported medical waste on the popular recreational beach.

IT has been over a month since the City was forced to shut several Durban North beaches due to dumped medical waste. Now it appears as though the problem is continuing as waste is still washing up on Beachwood Beach as well as the uMgeni River mouth.

William Collingwood, a Red Hill resident, who first spotted the illegally waste on 16 May today said that he had once again come across condoms, pills and medicine containers that had washed up along the beach on Sunday.

“I always walk from Beachwood to the uMgeni River and the waste can clearly be seen about 300 to 400 metres in,” he said.

Collingwood estimated that three or four garbage bags could be filled with the washed-up medical waste. The resident said he felt frustrated that the issue had not yet been resolved.

When Northglen News covered the #CleanBlueLagoon event on Saturday, we spotted one or two of these containers scattered amongst the rubbish.
