City warns of learnership scam

The fraudulent SMS claims that the potential employees must pay R2 000 for their application to be considered.

THE eThekwini Municipality has warned people who applied for the City’s Artisan Development Programme to remain wary of a new SMS scam.

In a recent press release the City said an SMS was being sent to unsuspecting people informing them that their applications have been successful and that they were required to a pay a fee.

“The fraudulent SMS, which is being sent from an unverified account, notifies the applicant that they are required to pay R2 000 for their application to be considered,” the statement read.

However, Dr Mpilo Ngubane, the Head of the eThekwini Municipal Academy, said no Municipal learnerships are for sale.

“Should applicants receive any messages, they must verify these at the Municipality’s application office,” he said. Ngubane insisted that the Municipality would not inform successful applicants via SMS and would not request potential employers to pay for a job position.

“It is not the practice of the Municipality to take bribes in exchange for jobs,” he said.
The City’s Integrity and Investigations Unit is investigating the source of the SMS, he added.
