Armed robbers target Gateway jewellery store

The armed suspects opened fire at security officers who were responding to the robbery at Narandas Jewellers.

A JEWELLERY store at Gateway was robbed by armed men earlier this morning. The suspects, who fled in a BMW, were involved in a high speed chase between local security companies and the Durban North SAPS. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the suspect’s abandoned the vehicle on Umhlanga Ridge Boulevard near the shopping centre before fleeing on foot. The incident occurred at about 9am this morning.

“Three suspects entered Narandas Jewellers and held up staff members before taking an undisclosed amount of  jewels. Center security (Enforce Security) tried to apprehend the suspects who fired one round from a 38 special handgun at the guards and then fled the scene in a dark grey BMW. The vehicle was fitted with false number plates and was used in a theft in the Berea area recently,” van Reenen said.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the SAPS K9 Unit are currently searching for the suspects who fled on foot. He added that the car had been fitted with false number plates.

“At this stage it is unclear what was taken, the vehicle has come up as stolen and the plates don’t match. No one was injured in the armed robbery and members of Marshall Security, Enforce Security and the station were involved in the chase,” he said.
