Miss Earth hopeful tackles ‘green’ education

The uMhlanga resident shared her love and knowledge of the environment with Durban’s youth.

“IT is so important that children are taught the importance of our environment from a young age so that it becomes second nature to them in their adult years.” These were the inspirational words of uMhlanga’s Miss Earth SA regional semi-finalist, Hasesha Naidu, as she recently volunteered her time to educate the country’s youth on environmental issues.

The young beauty visited two schools where she educated the pupils and planted some greenery. The first stop was Hlengimpilo Primary School, where Naidu spoke to Grade 3 pupils about littering and the ‘Three Rs’ – reduce, reuse and recycle. It was then off to the school gardens, where she, with the assistance of the children, planted 10 banana trees.

“This is something that the school will take ownership of. When fruit bears, it can be used for the school to feed the children, or to sell so that they can buy things that the children may need,” said the Miss Earth hopeful.

She then went on to Matabetulu Primary School, where she addressed pupils about the importance of the environment. Throughout the course of the day, Naidu also taught the children how to reuse potential waste materials by making a pot-plant out of a used plastic bottle. After the fun practical, Naidu and the pupils tackled the dusty garden, where they planted some much-needed flora.
