Go green, dump the pump

People have been urged to consider sustainable or alternative forms of transportation.

THE price of petrol skyrocketed this month after a massive 52 cents per litre increase. Motorists have since had to budget carefully to make ends meet.

On Thursday, 16 June, as part of the unofficial global day conservationists and environmentalists have urged the public to ‘dump the pump’ and to consider alternative or ‘green’ forms of transport.

Cycling, public transport and carpooling are just some of the common suggestions.

In February, the eThekwini Municipality launched its The GO!Durban Cycle Academy. The groundbreaking initiative was not only developed to facilitate a cycling culture in Durban, but also to encourage sustainable transport.

Speaking at the event, Thami Manyathi, head of eThekwini Transport and Authority, said the academy would be linked to the GO!Durban Integrated Rapid Transport Network currently being built around the city.

“The idea is to create a city where people can move more freely from A to B in ways that are more affordable, easy and safe. For many people, walking and cycling are part of their everyday lifestyles. It was out of this notion that a non-motorised transport network was born,” he said.
