One arrested after R15-million Durban harbour drug bust

The 37-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court next week.

ONE person has been arrested in connection with a R15-million drug bust at the Durban Harbour on Tuesday. Members of the Hawks Drug Enforcement Bureau recovered approximately 60 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine also known as tik.

The 37-year-old suspect was apprehended in Johannesburg, Auckland Park, after intense undercover operations by the elite unit.  He will now be transported to Durban where he is expected to be formally charged when he appears at the local Magistrate Court next week.

An intelligence driven operation conducted by Hawks, SARS and Durban Harbour Operational Response Services (ORS) members at Durban Container Terminal, led members to the drugs, with a street value of R15-million. They were hidden in cargo bags which was mixed with food boxes.

Lt General Mthandazo Ntlemeza applauded the members for the excellent work in apprehending the suspect.

“As we had promised, we mean business and we will never bury our heads in the sand but arrest and expose those that live in the lap of luxury and profit from the misery of ordinary citizens on the ground. We are not yet finished, we still continue with this investigation until everyone behind this find, is behind bars,” he said.
