‘Egg-citing’ developments hatch at Umgeni bird park

The park is set to unveil over 30 new bird species as well as its brand new marsh aviary.

EXCITEMENT flutters throughout the Umgeni River Bird Park as staff prepare to launch the facility’s biggest walk-through aviary at the end June.

For the last several months the staff have been revamping one of the older displays at the site to make room for more than 100 water birds and over 10 species of ducks and geese.

Some of these water birds include the Scarlet Ibis, the Moorhen, the Black-winged Red Bishop, the Red-eyed Pochard, the Comb Duck and the African Spoonbills.

Once completed, the 6 000 square metre marsh aviary will host an elevated walkway which will extend around the aviary to provide some spectacular views of the birds and their environment.

To create the ideal environment for the water birds the park has had to create a natural reed-bed water filtration system which will help filter most of the water in the park, and ultimately improve the facility’s water-saving efforts.

What’s more, during the launch the park will also be unveiling the exhibits of over 30 new bird species (or 185 new birds) that have been placed in the park’s care over the last six months.

The park is open every day from 9am to 5pm. The free-flight bird show is at 11am and 2pm from Tuesday to Sunday with shows on a Monday during school holidays. The entry fee is R50 for Adults and R30 for Children (4 to 12 years) and pensioners. Contact the park on 031 579 4600, or via e-mail education@urbp.co.za.
