Shoe collection a stomping success
Through the Durban North Baptist Church's 'A Day without Shoes' collection drive hundreds of shoes were collected and distributed among the most needy communities in Durban.
THE recent collection drive, A Day without Shoes, hosted by the Durban North Baptist Church, was a resounding success. A group of 50 volunteers marched along the Durban beachfront from uShaka Beach to raise awareness for people from poverty-stricken communities who struggle without a single pair of shoes.
The group did not traipse around the fact that millions of people across the globe are left vulnerable to infection, diseases and even disability simply due to a lack of shoes.
In some cases, said project coordinator, Jeanine Maré, this need prevents young people from attending school.
“We are thrilled with both the shoe donations as well as the turnout of the march. The response and interest from the community also amazed us. Many approached us and were asking why we were marching,” said Maré.
She confirmed that the project would now become an annual event. What’s more, she said a decision was made to continue the collection drive until the end of April. Community UPlift, a Durban North-based non-profit organisation, will distribute the donated shoes to the Sinakekele Children’s Home in Verulam as well as other needy communities in the area.
