Traffic chaos erupts in Glenhills area

Protests and roadworks have made the daily commute along and around Umhlanga Rocks Drive a nightmare.

TRAFFIC has become a nightmare in the Glenhills area. Not only have the roadworks along Umhlanga Rocks Drive (URD) caused major traffic delays, but the protesting at the Malacca Road Informal Settlement has exacerbated the situation. The area has been declared a ‘no-go’ zone.

Angry protesters, citing service delivery failures as the reason, have completely blocked off the road. They chopped down a tree at the bottom end of Ryde Place and littered the Malacca Road entrances with rubble, cutting off all access to the area.

What’s more, as the road-resurfacing project along URD continues along the top end of Margaret Maytom Avenue, access to Melrose Avenue, Terrance Place and Ryde Place have been temporarily suspended.

The Malacca Road residents are unhappy about what they deem a ‘false promise’ given to them by the housing department that they would be moved to Cornubia. Residents also say they are tired of their illegal electricity connections being removed despite promises they would receive free electricity.
