Malacca Road residents block road, stone cars

The residents are unhappy about the lack of service delivery at the settlement.

RESIDENTS of an informal settlement have barricaded parts of Malacca Road with items from the nearby dump and have set tyres alight in an attempt to highlight the lack of service delivery in the area. Last month, several resident of Malacca Road Informal Settlement threatened to march for change by blocking the road.

Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen has urged residents to avoid the area.

“There have been reports of shots being fired by protesters as well as a number of vehicles being stoned. We advise residents to avoid the area at all costs while all role-players attend to the situation,” he said.

When Northglen News visited the settlement earlier today, residents said they were sick and tired of the lack of basic sanitary amenities and demanded better service delivery. Some residents in Glenhills have called for the demolition of the settlement.

The residents also bemoaned the fact the electricity department kept removing illegal connections despite promises from the city to give the residents free electricity.
