Teens inspire through murals

The group of volunteers spent hours creating beautiful murals to improve the learning environment at the Masifundisane Pre-Primary School in Broadway.

A GROUP of local teens have been sacrificing their personal time to decorate the classrooms at the Masifundisane Pre-Primary School in Broadway.

The altruistic adolescents, Sarah (16) and Hanna (14) Rowlands, Chloe Naidoo (16), Alicia De Bruyn (16) and Trysten Streak (16) spent several days in their creative elements, painting colourful murals on the walls to inspire the little learners.

Sarah said they found out about the need at the school through the 57th Trafalgar Sea Scouts, based in Virginia, and then decided to dedicate their community service hours at the school.

“The pupils at this school are from disadvantaged backgrounds, and so we wanted to help by improving their learning environment. Our aim is to facilitate their visual learning so that they are more inspired and excited to learn,’ she said.

Hannah echoed her sister’s sentiments, saying she wanted to help the children feel proud of their school.

“They have a completely different learning environment to what children from privileged backgrounds would enjoy. I firmly believe that one’s learning environment can shape the quality of education as well as help mold the pupil, and so here we were inspired to help improve their. Although we are only painting simple murals, it also shows these little ones that there are people who care,” added Naidoo.

Currently the volunteer-based school caters for 50 children at Grade R, Grade 00 and Grade 000 levels.

The Masifundisane Pre-Primary School was started as a facility where children of domestic workers could learn English so that it would not be a struggle for them to learn the language when they are old enough to go to school, explained the school’s principal, Sandy Christie.

Now the school provides early childhood development (ECD) to any children whose parents cannot afford to send them to a pre-school facility. ECD is important for the foundation of any child’s learning abilities, explained Christie.
