uMhlanga gal vies for Miss Earth SA crown

"If everyone did their bit, our planet's environmental crisis can essentially be conquered," said the uMhlanga's Miss Earth SA hopeful.

GROWING up in an environmentally conscious home has cultivated a love for both people and nature within the heart of uMhlanga resident, Hasesha Naidu. The passionate environmentalist is now set to compete for the next Miss Earth SA title.

“Miss Earth is a leadership programme providing a fantastic opportunity for me to raise awareness and educate people, especially the youth, on current environmental issues,” she said.

Naidu has already affiliated her efforts with The Earth Organisation and its sustainable living expo, where she empowered and educated the youth.

What’s more, the 26-year-old candidate attorney also takes pride in practicing what she preaches.

“In our home we have always been aware of the environment and are all avid recyclers, separating food waste from cardboard, paper, plastic and glass. I am highly conscious of energy usage and save electricity wherever I can, for example by unplugging appliances to reduce ‘phantom’ loads and switching off our geyser to conserve power,” she said.

Through the Miss Earth SA, Naidu hopes to tackle four environmental issues: waste management, clean energy as well as water and marine conservation.

Pollution and littering remain big problems, so I plan to target schools to teach the youth about waste management and recycling. I will also be discussing aspects of water, energy and marine conservation. By teaching them from a young age, these habits will easily develop into their lifestyles. Through topical examples, I will illustrate how small changes in our lives can make a big impact on our environment,” she said.

“If everyone did their bit, our planet’s environmental crisis can essentially be conquered,” she added.
