Electricity at the switch of a button

Illegal electricity connections claimed the lives of three men on Friday night, but despite this the problem has not abated.

EVEN as we write about illegal electricity connections and people who carry them out, and those who die as a result, we go home to homes with functioning electricity.

Do we ever stop to think what it must be like to live without electricity daily, with none or very few prospects of living in a home that has electricity at the switch of a button?

We experienced it just a bit when load shedding was in full force last year, but still not to the extent of living daily without electricity.

Yes, I know we ask so easily, ‘So what is government doing to provide electricity to those who do not have?’ Perhaps that should not be what we are asking, perhaps ask, ‘How would I feel if I had to live without electricity daily?’

And once we have done that, consider how privileged we are to have access to this commodity. That people would put their lives and those of their children at risk by illegally connecting electricity should tell us that they are desperate.
