Illegal power connections kill three people

The victims were electrocuted after stepping on exposed wires during the storm that wreaked havoc in Durban on Friday night.

ILLEGAL electricity connections have been blamed for the deaths of three men at the Kenville and Sim Place Informal Settlements. The men died on Friday night.

This comes days after the Mayor, James Nxumalo, announced the city would be waging war against illegal power connections.

According to W/O Leon Audh of the Greenwood Park Station, the victims were electrocuted after stepping on the exposed live wires during the Durban storm.

“Our main concerns are that illegal connections are dangerous and often result in serious injury or even death. Many children also lose their lives by unknowingly trampling on naked live wiring,” he said.

He added that the problem persists despite weekly operations conducted by the station and the electricity department.

“Connecting electricity illegally or tampering with power supply terminals is considered a criminal offense and punishable by law,” he said.
