Hope for rescued puppy

The local animal rescue organisation has appealed for donations to assist with the rehabilitation of the lame pup named Hope.

THE Dachshund Haven has made an urgent appeal to the public following the rescue of a lame puppy in Durban North.

To rehabilitate and rehome the pup will cost thousands of Rands, and with most animal organisations still encumbered by strays and surrendered pets over the festive season, the haven is in desperate need of funds.

Hope, as she has affectionately been named, suffers from a congenital joint deformity, which prevents her from walking or standing properly.

According to Lakota Schultz, one of four passionate directors of the animal organisation, the disorder does not cause Hope any pain.

“It basically means that the joints in her ankles, knees and hips are double-jointed. Her legs are strong, but her deformity prevents her from standing or walking properly,” said the Durban North resident.

Hope might undergo surgery to repair the defect, or will need braces or wheels to compensate for her disability, all of which will be expensive.

What’s more, finding a home for Hope will take much longer than with healthy pups, which means the costs involved in her care will be considerably higher.

“Hope will need a special home, preferably a home without children. Her owners will need to understand her needs and condition. With normal healthy pups, it can take up to four months to find them a home,” said Schultz.

Dachshunds, said Schultz, are prone to spine and leg problems due to centuries of breeding.
