Elusive cobra spotted on uMhlanga promenade

Residents say the snake was spotted on the promenade near Umhlanga Sands.

IN his time as a snake catcher, Durban North resident, Jason Arnold, has responded to thousands of animals and indeed resident’s in distress. However, one snake in particular, believed to be a Mozambique Spitting Cobra, has proved more troublesome for the 37-year-old than any other.

Earlier this week he got a call from concerned residents near Umhlanga Sands who had spotted a snake on the promenade.

Arnold was alerted to the snake’s presence in May last year but attempts to rescue the venomous snake and relocate it to the nearby Hawaan Forest Nature Reserve proved unsuccessful. He added he had found a number of the species in the northern parts of the reserve.

“Everytime I have gone out, its proved difficult to find. They have described it as a browny gray snake about 1 to 2 meters in length. From the description it sounds like a spitting cobra,” he said.

Arnold urged residents not to approach the snake directly but contact him immediately. His mobile number is 082 745 6375.

In December last year, a Dutch teenager was lucky to have escaped serious injury after a spitting cobra sprayed its venom in both his eyes.
