10 arrested during roadblock

SAPS warns drivers who don't obey the law that they will be prosecuted.

Durban North SAPS arrested 10 people last week for various criminal offences at a roadblock along the M41. A further three suspects were arrested for selling dagga.

It’s all part of the station’s ongoing effort to stamp out crime in the area. Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, said roadblocks would be a common occurence to send out a clear message that drunk driving and driving without a license would not be tolerated.

“There is a zero tolerance policy for drunk driving. I urge all motorists to change their behaviour. This is a criminal offence and you will face jail time should you be found guilty,” he said.

During the roadblock, four people were arrested for drunk driving, while six were arrested for traffic violations (including driving without a license and driving an unlicensed car).

“It is our responsibility to ensure that our roads are safe and the public respects the law. Roadblocks will be a common feature and the offenders will be dealt with severely. Our message is to stay on the right side of the law. If you are going to disobey the law, then be prepared to take responsibility for your actions,” he said.

Deokaran also warned drug dealers saying they ill be caught and prosecuted and potential buyers could also be arrested.
