The policeman who was shot during a patrol in KwaMashu died yesterday.

THE Durban North community is mourning the death of a local policeman who was shot in action.

W/O Ash Ramsakkan was wounded during a shoot-out in the KwaMashu township, north of Durban, on Sunday, 15 November. According to the Phoenix Crime Watch Facebook page, Ramsakkan was gunned down by three AK-47-wielding men while patrolling Malandela Road at around 10am.

The suspects are said to have opened fire on Ramsakkan and his fellow officers. He was reportedly shot in the neck and rushed to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

Tyron Powell of Marshall Security extended his condolences to the family of the fallen policeman, saying, “It is with great sadness that we inform that our friend, Ash Ramsakkan, has passed away as a result of a gunshot wound he sustained while in a gun battle with suspects. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Condolences to the Ramsakkan family on their tragic loss.”

The funeral will be held tomorrow.
