15 drunk drivers nabbed in uMhlanga

An operation by police and the RTI on the M41 nabbed 15 drunk drivers.

A TOTAL of 15 drivers were arrested and charged with drunk driving in a roadblock on the M41 (going towards Gateway) on Friday night. The roadblock, organised by the Durban North SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), began just after 10pm. However, of concern to police was that some motorists made illegal U-turns and attempted to drive back down the one-way towards the M4.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North Police Station, said that roadblocks would be a common occurrence as the festive period approached to send out a clear message that drunk driving would not be tolerated.

“In just four hours, we were able to arrest 15 drivers for drunk driving. Many drivers pleaded their innocence; however, if you do decide to drive intoxicated, you will be arrested, no excuses. There is a zero tolerance policy for drunk driving. As we get closer to the festive season, there will be more roadblocks,” he said.
