Artists share their love of creativity

Dozens of artworks, created by the North Coast Artists, are on display and available for purchase until Saturday, 1 November. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

THE North Coast Artists celebrated their creativity last week with the opening of their annual art exhibition at the La Lucia Mall. On Friday, the group revealed the breathtaking works created by various members. The cream of the crop were also awarded with prizes for their beautiful artworks.

Well-known North Coast artist, Jane Digby, was the guest speaker of the evening and said in her opening speech, “Creativity is not something that can be used up, it is something that grows the more you use it. So rather than trying to create a masterpiece every time, be creative simply for the love of art.”

The dozens of artworks are on display and available for purchase until Saturday, 1 November. Part of the funds raised by the event will be donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

June Dovey walked away with the most awards on he evening after receiving the ‘Alternative Award’, two commendations as well as the ‘Best Drawing Award’.

The most prestigious MOAG award for ‘Best on Show’ as well as the ‘People’s Choice’ awards were won by Barbara Becke.  The ‘Painting of the Year’ award was scooped up by Chris Khoury.

For more than 39 years, the artists have also gathered at monthly meetings to inspire and aid fellow artists in improving their skills. Members of the group range from young and old, and while the majority hail from the Durban North area. Some travel from as far as Ballito and Hillcrest for the artistic inspiration.

The meetings are held every second Saturday of the month at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament Hall, Newport Ave, Glenashley. Entrance costs R30 for members and R40 for non-members, which includes great demos, tips, competitions and refreshments.
