Getting inked for charity

Local tattoo parlour urge residents to support this weekend's tattoo-a-thon to raise money for charity.

AN uMhlanga tattoo parlour is hosting a Tattoo-a-thon to raise money for charity. Teardrop Tattoo Parlour, alongside local residents and tattoo-loving folks, will give up a small space for a big cause as they support The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) on 17 October. The day is about helping raise funds for kids fighting cancer and dispelling society’s negative perceptions of people with ink.

Tattoo artist, Gavin Rowe, and his wife, Caroline, said they are hoping residents come out and show their support for the worthy cause.

“All of our proceeds will go towards CHOC, and it involves getting a tattoo for one hour to the value of R850 from 9am to 7pm. There will also be temporary tattoos for children and those who don’t want to be permanently inked for R50 on the day. The last tattoo shop I was at always supported this initiative and when we got our own parlour we felt we needed to continue the good work.

“It’s also a cause close to our hearts – I lost my mom to cancer recently and we know so many of our friends who have been affected by it. This is about giving back and supporting the community. All the funds raised will be used to support children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders and their families, improving early detection and facilitating effective treatment,” she said.

Her husband and world-renowned tattoo artist, Gavin, echoed her thoughts.

“It’s going to a good cause and I stand behind any charity drive, especially helping children who are battling this disease. There are no words to explain why I do this, but I’ve got so much and I want to give so much more. It’s something we will always support. What better cause could you go for?” Gavin said.

The concept is simple: visit www.teardroptattoo.co.za to book a slot and turn up on 17 October and get inked (from 9am till 7pm). You can also visit www.tattooathon.co.za and click on ‘Book a Tattoo’, and you’ll be able to browse through a list of participating tattoo studios in your city.
