Cop killed in the line of duty

It's still unclear how a policeman was shot and killed during a botched hijacking in the north of Durban today.

POLICE have confirmed that a policeman has been shot and killed north of Durban earlier today. His partner was also wounded during the incident.

The duo were serving an interdict to a resident in Inanda when they were attacked and overpower by the suspects, confirmed SAPS provincial police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane.

Zwane said the suspects forced the policemen into the police car and drove about 5km away from the initial scene. There they shot the policemen, tossed them into the back of the vehicle and attempted to set the car alight. However, they were not successful, added Zwane.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called out by the SAPS to assist in locating the missing police vehicle. The critically-injured police member was later airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Last year, the Durban North community was shocked and outraged when Greenwood Park policeman, Cpt Basil Naidoo, was shot and killed during an armed robbery.
