Avoca businessman shot during armed robbery

As they fled the scene the woman heard the suspects talking to one of the other tenants outside her shop, followed by three gunshots.

AN Avoca Hills businessman was shot and critically injured during what is assumed to have been a botched robbery on Wednesday last week.

According to W/O Leon Audh of the Greenwood Park SAPS, a tuckshop owner in Khabazela Village in Avoca Hills was approached by an unknown man at around 7pm.

He enquired about buying airtime, after which he pointed a firearm at her.

“He then demanded cash and she gave him R700. At that point, the suspect was joined by two additional men, who also pointed guns at her and demanded airtime. They took airtime, cash and her cell phone after they instructed her to lie on the floor,” he said.

As they fled the scene she heard the men talking to one of the other tenants outside her shop, followed by three gunshots. When she noted that it was quiet, she exited her shop and found her neighbouring tenant leaning against a pool table, covered in blood.

The woman immediately notified the Greenwood Park SAPS. Audh confirmed that the victim was taken to hospital and is still in the process of recovering from the gunshot. Cases of robbery and attempted murder has been opened at the station.

The suspects fled and are unknown, he said, and police urge anyone with information to come forward and contact Det/Colonel Serfontein on 083 426 9657.
