Black sludge pours out on Umhlanga beach

A black, oil-like substance is pouring into Grannies Pool.

UMHLANGA residents taking a walk along the popular Grannies Pool on uMhlanga Beach this morning got the shock of their lives when they spotted, black, oil-like sludge pouring out a pipe at the pool. Howard Saul said he came across the sludge at 8am.

The concerned resident said: “This is not the first time I have seen waste coming from this particular storm drain.” Saul said that they had alerted the beach superintendent previously but to date had not seen any attempts to stop the pollution.

Saul said he could now no longer swim on this stretch of pristine beach following what looks like an oil spill. What’s more, said Saul, the spill is posing a threat to marine life found among the rock pools.

Another resident called the Northglen News to alert us the spill while another sent us an urgent email saying: “Please see attached photos of the oily waste currently flowing onto the beach at Grannies Pool! This is totally unacceptable! I’m sick and tired of our beautiful beaches and our ocean getting totally disregarded!”
