Crime fighter, Leon, ‘walks the talk’

Arresting criminals and grappling against injustice, he said, has been a lifelong dream.

FIGHTING crime is something that is close to the heart of the new communications officer at the Greenwood Park SAPS, W/O Leon Audh.

Arresting criminals and grappling against injustice, he said, has been a lifelong dream. Audh grew up in a family of policemen, so becoming a SAPS member himself was an inevitable course.

“I love being able to serve the community – to save and protect lives. It is a humbling and incredibly rewarding experience,” he said.

Audh joined the police force in 1993 – straight out of matric. He was assigned to the Public Order Police Unit, where he travelled the country battling taxi violence, violent criminals and various crime hot-spots.

Over the years the Redhill resident has received extensive training, which includes special weapons and tactics (SWAT), visual tracking, advanced driving and crowd control.

The husband and father of three said the hardest part of his job is not being able to assist the victims of crime.

“It is difficult to see the victim or the family of a victim’s pain and not be able to provide them with closure or justice. Not being able to apprehend a suspect or secure a conviction weighs heavily on me,” he said.

On the opposite end, making an arrest and securing a conviction is one of the greatest rewards, said Audh.

“It makes all the hours of hard and dangerous work worth it when you see the criminal behind bars,” he said.

In his spare time, Audh dabbles in the stock exchange and volunteers at local rehab facilities where he provides counselling.
