Art Givers showcases youngest exhibitor

uMhlanga resident, Jessica Rankin, recently became the youngest person to showcase her paintings at the annual Art Givers exhibition held at the La Lucia Mall over the weekend.

NOT everyone is born with an artistic flair. However, creativity and the ability to make beautiful artwork seem to come naturally to 13-year-old Jessica Rankin.

The uMhlanga resident recently became the youngest person to showcase her paintings at the annual Art Givers exhibition held at the La Lucia Mall over the weekend.

Rankin discovered her artistic passion and talent four years ago during her art classes at school. She recently began taking classes at the Hands on Art school in Glenashley with art teacher, Syd Sellars.

He approached the Art Givers organisation regarding Rankin’s art and they agreed to allow her to join the exhibition.

Speaking to the Northglen News last week, the young artist said she felt nervous and excited about the achievement.

“The other exhibitors are far more experienced that I am, so I am a little nervous about the feedback that I will get,” she admitted.

However, Rankin’s art seemed to be a hit among the residents. Before her artworks were even set on the display, one of her paintings of a tiny monkey was scooped up by an admirer, much to dismay of her biggest fan, younger brother, Jake who planned to purchase the very same painting.

The Grade 7 pupil is set on pursuing a career as an artist and dreams of opening an art studio on a farm where she can continue to create her creative pieces.
