Former Northwood School pupil killed in crash

A high-speed crash claimed the life of an 18-year-old.

A FORMER Northwood School pupil was tragically killed in a high-speed collision on the M19 off-ramp from the N2 south-bound late on Wednesday night. Keegan Moodley (18), a Verulam resident who matriculated last year, had to be cut free from the twisted wreckage, but his injuries were fatal and he was declared dead on the scene.

His former school issued a statement this morning expressing their heartfelt condolences.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Keegan’s passing. He was a valued member of the Northwood community and is fondly remembered by fellow pupils and staff. His energetic smile and gregarious personality will be missed by all who knew him. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the school said.

According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, the accident occurred after 10pm.

“When we arrived on scene we found the wreckage of a BMW occupying the width of the roadway with the driver still in the vehicle. Specialised rescue tools were needed to cut the teenager free, and on closer examination it was discovered that he had unfortunately suffered a fatally traumatic brain injury and there was nothing paramedics could do to assist him. He was declared deceased on scene.

“The facts pertaining to the incident are unclear; however, eyewitness accounts allege the driver lost control of the vehicle at high speed before colliding with the Armco barriers, spinning several times and colliding with the concrete support of the overhead bridge,” Van Reenen said.
