Honour Madiba by assisting The Domino Foundation

Spend your 67 minutes with the Domino Foundation on Friday.

Excitement is mounting at The Domino Foundation as the Durban North-based non-profit organisation prepares for this year’s International Mandela Day.

The staff invite the public to join them on Friday, 17 July in spending their 67 minutes in honour of Madiba at any of their several action-packed activities.

Master sandwich-makers are urged to join the ‘Sarmie Stack Station’, making delicious peanut butter sandwiches for the hungry. Last year more than 4 000 sandwiches were made, and this year they are aiming to make 6 700 sandwiches. To take part, residents are asked to take along loaves of bread, margarine, peanut butter and sandwich bags.

If gift-wrapping is more your speciality, volunteers can also spend their 67 minutes at the hamper station, where they will they will be able to assist a number of families and individuals that are in crisis, both here in Durban North and in the township community. Each hamper can feed a family of four for a week. It provides necessary meals during school holidays and over weekends, when general feeding schemes close down.

Each parcel is valued at R200 and consists of various groceries and toiletry items. Residents are asked to take along and donate some of the following items: rice, maize, sugar, tea, tinned baked beans, tinned sardines or other tinned food, soy mince, salt or oil.

Alternatively, residents can assist the the ‘Jerseys in July Station’, where they can provide relief to community members during this freezing winter. They are urged to assist office staff in collecting good condition winter clothes.

On Mandela Day, they can simply bring along the items and start sorting and packing the winter parcels. Donateable items include, jerseys, socks, blankets, closed shoes, tracksuits, scarves, beanies and gloves.

You could also spend your time at the cutest and most creative station of all – ‘The Blanket of Love Station’. Here residents will be able to make quilt-like blankets for the babies at the foundation. Fabric paints, stamps and stencils and various other items for the creation of the blankets will be provided by the organistaion. Volunteers simply need to show up with their creative spirit

Interested parties are urged to RSVP by 10 July to Amber on 031 563 9605 or via e-mail at volun teer@domino.org.za.
