Gate motor thieves on the prowl

Guard your gate motor with anti-theft brackets, says Durban North SAPS.

DURBAN North SAPS cautioned residents to be on the lookout for suspicious men after a spike in gate motor theft.
Last year, a suspected syndicate targeted Durban North and uMhlanga where gate motors, worth upwards of R2 000, were being stolen.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, while there was only one theft in Mackeurtan Avenue last week, he urged residents to fit locks or anti-theft brackets on their gate motors.

“This is of increasing concern to the station, and because many people don’t report this type of crime, we are unsure of the extent of the thefts. The electric gate motors are fairly expensive and there are a large number of homes in the North Durban area with them,” he explained.

“I ask residents using electric gates to take precautions and if possible, weld a bracket onto the motor or a box that can be locked and placed over the motor to prevent it from being stolen. If people see it is easy to remove a motor they will steal it, but if the motor is protected by a brace or bracket around it then chances of theft of that motor would be very slim,” said Deokaran.
