Dumping spirals out of control in Glenhills

In addition to broken furniture, clothes, toys and rubble, De Boer said in the past a dead dog as well as the carcass of a bush pig was found dumped along the road.

DUMPING along Ryde Place and Malacca Road in Glenhills has once again escalated out of control. Both of the roads are littered with home refuse as well as rubble dumped by contractors.

uMhlanga ward councillor Heinz de Boer was infuriated by residents’ ‘lack of respect for the community’.

“It is simply irresponsible behaviour. It is local residents who miss the garbage truck and then are too lazy to drive an extra few kilometres to the Malacca Road Garden Refuse and Community Drop-off Centre. The Springfield landfill site also accepts rubble and rubbish at no cost. So there is no excuse,” he said.

The municipality clears the road at least once every two weeks, he added.

In addition to broken furniture, clothes, toys and rubble, De Boer said in the past a dead dog as well as the carcass of a bush pig was found dumped along the road.

“It attracts rats and snakes and is just generally a health hazard. It also devalues the area. If people don’t take responsibility for their waste the dumping will never end,” he said.

One company and a resident, whose names are known to the Northglen News, have been identified among the dumped rubbish. De Boer said he would be reporting them to both Metro Police and Durban Solid Waste.
