Man arrested, found with 50 pieces of scaffolding

Construction sites are being targeted by criminals, warns Durban North SAPS.

UMHLANGA has certainly seen its fair share of construction in the last few years. However, the wealth boom, while good for the economy, has also led to thieves targeting construction sites. This was the case on Thursday evening when a man was arrested with 50 pieces of metal scaffolding stolen from a site on Zenith Drive, uMhlanga.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the man had put the material into a van and was later stopped and arrested by police.

“We’ve seen a definite increase in the theft of material from construction sites in Durban North and uMhlanga. Some construction sites are fairly accessible and this presents opportunities for would-be criminals. I urge construction site owners to secure their materials and not to leave tools lying around,” he said.

Deokaran added that thieves generally looked for copper pipes or metal items, which they sell to unscrupulous scrap dealers.
