Bunnies dumped at Durban North refuse depot

Two rabbits were reportedly dumped at the Riverside Gardens refuse depot by a woman who claimed to be immigrating.

THE Durban North community has expressed outrage after it came to light that an unknown woman dumped a pair of rabbits at the Riverside Gardens refuse depot yesterday morning. She reportedly claimed that she was immigrating and could no longer care for them.

Fortunately the furry duo was rescued by a local resident, Danica Nayar, and her husband.

The Nayars, who were offloading wood at the depot at around noon, were approached by municipal workers who asked them if they would be able to take the pair of bunnies.

“They told us that the bunnies were dropped off sometime in the morning by a woman. She said she was moving to Australia and wouldn’t keep them. They told us that they did not know what to do with the bunnies, and did not want them to die,” said Nayar.

They took them to the SPCA in the hopes that the NPO would be able assist, but there they were told that it was difficult to re-home rabbits.

Eventually they brought the critters to Dr Kerry Easson, at Riverside Veterinary Clinic, who did not think twice about taking them in.

Easson had them sterilised and transported to the Bunville Rabbit Rescue centre, where they will stay until they can be adopted. They have since been nicknamed Cersei and Daenerys.

Carol Booth of the Monkey Helpline, condemned the action. “We were at the veterinary clinic with a monkey when the Nayars brought in the box with rabbits. It has become a huge problem as we receive a lot of calls from people who are immigrating and looking for new homes for their pets. We have become a throwaway society. People who are considering or in the process of immigrating should not take on new pets and should plan early to find their pets new homes,” she said.
