Don red lisptick to show your support

Red My Lips shows solidarity and support for sexual assault victims.

THE month April marks Red My Lips month. Red My Lips is an international non-profit organisation that runs an annual global awareness campaign that they say shows solidarity and support for sexual assault victims.

On their website the US based organisation say: “We continue to convince ourselves that rape only happens to ‘those girls’ who ‘weren’t careful,’ ‘gave mixed signals,’ or ‘put themselves in a bad situation.”

They describe rape and sexual assault as “an act of domination, entitlement, and violence”.

Its formation followed the rape of the founder of the organisation, Danielle Tansino who was raped in 2011.

Tansino had been out with friends at the time of the attack and after filing a police report and a harrowing court ordeal, she was told that “Jurors don’t like girls that drink.”

The wearing of the red lipstick in April allows supporters to speak out against these damaging myths and victim-blaming attitudes. “It allows us all to stand in solidarity with survivors and refuse to be invisible…refuse to be silent,” Tansino said.
