Hard work secures new destiny for Khumalo

Blessing Khumalo, who lives in Durban North, has proven that a little hard work never hurt anyone.

AMERICAN inventor, Thomas Edison, was a strong advocate of hard work and determination. He has famously been quoted as saying, “Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work.”

This quote could not be more relevant to the success story of Durban North resident, Blessing Khumalo, who has recently been promoted to secretary of the parish priest at the St Martin’s Church, Rev Dr Peter Wyngaard.

Khumalo, who was originally hired as an assistant to the church’s caretaker in 2001, was later promoted to senior caretaker and was definitely not scared of a little hard work. Through sheer determination and a positive attitude he was able to build a new career for himself.

“I feel that you don’t need to look down on yourself. If you are not where you want to be in life you must teach yourself the skills that you need to move forward. Always do your best, as you never know who could be watching. Inspire confidence in others and show people that you have the potential to do more,” he said.

The optimistic resident taught himself how to use basic computer skills and then also took computer lessons to help him gain additional skills and experience. “One of the members at the church took notice of my efforts and bought me a brand new laptop, which enabled me to improve my skills even more.

The same member also spoke to management at the church, which secured my new position. It was such a surprise – it was the least of my expectations,” said Khumalo.

According to the modest resident the key to success is to enjoy what you are doing. “God puts you somewhere for a purpose, and unless you enjoy what you are doing and give it your best you will miss out on opportunities,” he said.
