Car jamming on the rise in uMhlanga

Ten cases of remote jamming have been reported in the past four days.

A CAR jamming syndicate is operating in the uMhlanga area after a number of cases were reported to the police, rising significantly in the past few days. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, there have been 10 cases of theft out of motor vehicles opened since Monday this week.

What’s more, there have been 15 cases reported altogether in the past two weeks. In one of the worst cases, a man was robbed of  a suitcase after his car was broken into on Lagoon Drive. The suitcase, filled with clothing and jewellery, was reportedly worth R53 000.

“Thieves armed with remote-control jammers are making a killing stealing from parked cars. At least half of the 15 cases reported involved no forced entry. We suspect it is the work of a remote jamming syndicate.

“The cases have been spread out on residential roads, on the beach as well as outside shopping malls. Items such as laptops, iPads, cameras, GPSs, external hard drives, perfumes and cash are what the suspects most often look for. I urge residents to double-check that they have locked their cars and not leave valuables in plain view in their cars,” he said.
