Two stabbed in Beachwood Mangroves robbery

Police have had to step up patrols at the 76-hectare reserve.

A GROUP of visitors who made their way to the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve on Monday (12 January) were lucky to escape with their lives after they were viciously attacked and robbed. The incident occurred between 7am and 7.15am. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, three people from a local company arrived at the reserve to set up for a team-building exercise when they heard voices coming from the nearby bushes.

“Two men emerged from the bushes and walked towards the group. They pulled out knives, threatened them, demanded their valuables and assaulted them. Two of the group suffered deep stab wounds to the back in the attack. The men were seen running off in the direction of Riverside Road.

“We have stepped up patrols in the area and believe the suspects may have been vagrants. We have questioned a number of people who spotted the suspects but only had vague descriptions of them. The criminals were looking for an easy target, and a group of two women and a man represented that,” Deokaran concluded.

No arrests have yet been made.
