Durban North intruder crawls into property

A would-be-thief crawled past the beams of a home on Wimbledon Place in Durban North before attempting to steal the home owners' vehicle.

A BRAZEN thief used unconventional methods to access a home on Wimbledon Place in  Durban North in the early hours of this morning. Video surveillance caught the intruder climbing over the property fence, getting down on his hands and knees, and crawling from the fence towards the garage – evading the security beams.

Once he reached the garage he stood up and tried to open the vehicle doors. When he realized that all the doors were locked he got back on his hands and knees, and began crawling back to the fence.

The home owners were woken by their alarm at approximately 4am, when the thief’s getaway strategy backfired. He accidentally set off the alarm as he was climbing over the fence. Video surveillance also caught the man running down the street shortly after the alarm was set off.

It is clear that the would-be-thief knew the exact location of the beams. The home owner, who wished only to be identified as Nicola, said that she had no idea how the intruder knew about the beams.

“He did not look familiar. I have no idea how he knew his way around my property. I still can’t believe that he crawled along like that. We are absolutely terrified now, and have had to have our security system assessed. It is frustrating that we have to spend even more money to protect our home,” she said.

Four months ago the family had a similar scare when an intruder also entered their property, set off the alarm and fled.
