Nine injured in M4 accident

A major accident on the M4 freeway has brought traffic in the Durban North vicinity to a standstill.

NINE people were injured in a collision on the M4 just after the M41 offramp on Friday afternoon. It is believed that a bakkie smashed into the back of another vehicle causing traffic to come to a virtual standstill. According to Neil Powell of Crisis Medical, the M4 going towards the city (southbound) was closed for 45 minutes.

“Nine people were injured; eight of them were passengers who were sitting on the back of the bakkie,  including the driver of the bakkie who sustained a compound fracture to his lower leg. He was trapped for almost an hour as rescue workers tried to extricate him. Miraculously the driver of the vehicle in front of him walked away unharmed from the incident,” he said.

Powell added traffic was severely affected in both directions.

“The fire department struggled to get to the scene of the accident because of the gridlocked roads around Durban North and uMhlanga,” he said.
