A head on collision claimed the lives on six people on Saturday morning, near Blue Lagoon bridge.

A HORRIFIC car crash claimed the lives of six people, on the M4 near Blue Lagoon bridge, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to Caleb Wang, the accident occurred at approximately 1.45am, as two vehicles collided and burst into flames. Five of the commuters were in one vehicle and the sixth was driving alone in the second car.

It is believed that one of the vehicles were travelling on the wrong side of the highway. Two other vehicles were also involved.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find the two of the vehicles engulfed in flames and immediately called the Durban Fire Department to assist.

Whilst firefighters battled the blaze the Rescue Care paramedics attempted to stabilise two of the victims from the secondary vehicles.

Once the fire had been extinguished paramedics assessed the occupants of the primary vehicles,  however, they had succumbed to their severe injuries, said Rescue Care spokesman, Garrith Jamieson. The two injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital.

It is believed that the five occupants in one of the primary vehicles were friends from uMhlanga.
